BITCOIN - TIDBIT, NJ Consumer Fraud Act, and Subpoena to 19-year old Massachussetts college student

Here is the EFF complaint against New Jersey, filed in response to a subpoena for information regarding Tidbit's services.

Here are Tidbit's services:

Tidbit helps you monetize on your visitors without annoying ads by using javascript to use clients' computers to mine forBitcoins (BTC). The performance is 20K hashes/client. It takes about 2,700,000,000,000,000 h/BTC.
So if it ran across 1000 users machines, you could produce 7.40x10^-9 BTC. With BTC at 350, you would have made 2.5x10^-6 dollars!
The biggest problem is that it takes an incredible amount of computing power to generate a bitcoin nowadays and javascript is inherently slow at doing this sort of mining. The second problem is that performing these calculations on your devices causes the battery to drain faster.
But, the good news is that it is a step in the right direction for monetizing in an ad-less web.

More background, by EFF.

TechDirt, complaining of overreach.
